The Depths below the Seam
A deep coal mine in northern Russia breaks into something that should not exist. An investigation team is sent down....will they return?
Plot
Ugolny-17 The night before I sat at the small table in my apartment for a long time after they left. The place still smells like her, even after four years. Galina took most of what mattered when she went south with our daughter. I kept the table, the two chairs, and the silence. Outside the window the settlement is quiet the way it always is at this hour — a few lights still on, wind moving dust along the road, the distant hum of the mine that never really sleeps. This town only exists because men are willing to keep going down into the dark. When the dark stops paying, the town starts dying. We have been dying for a while now. They came after the shift. Not the usual bosses. Men in clean coats who did not offer full names. They spoke politely and carefully, the way people speak when they already know you will say yes. There had been a breakthrough in the lowest exploratory gallery, they said. Something opened that was not coal and not any rock the engineers could explain. The section was sealed the same day. Work stopped. Pay slowed. Rumors moved through the bathhouse and the canteen like bad air. Some said gas. Some said a collapse. Some said the ground itself had changed. No one who asked too many questions kept their shifts. Now they want a team to go in. Four miners who know the deep levels. Two soldiers. Two scientists. The money they offered is large enough that I felt it in my chest when they said the number. Large enough to clear what I owe and still leave something left. Large enough, maybe, to take a train south and stand in front of my daughter without looking like the man who stayed behind in this frozen place while her mother gave her a different life. I am forty-seven years old. My knee aches every time the weather turns. I have spent more years under this ground than I have spent above it in daylight. I know the sounds the rock makes when it is tired. I know the smell of a roadway that is about to go bad. I know what it means when men stop joking on the cage ride down. This job feels like that silence. They told us almost nothing useful. Only that the breakthrough sits far below the working horizons, that the air beyond the bulkhead is colder than it should be, and that experienced men are required to keep the others from killing themselves on the way there. The soldiers look like men sent to hold a perimeter around something they do not yet understand. The scientists look already hungry for whatever is waiting. None of them have lived with the mine the way we have. None of them know how the dark can lean on a man when the lights are few and the road back is long. I accepted. Not because I trust them. Not because I care what they found. I accepted because the money is real and my life here is not getting larger. Tomorrow we will stand at the headframe in the thin morning light, climb into the cage, and go down past every familiar level until we reach the sealed door that has been closed for three weeks. Whatever is on the other side of it has already frightened the people who give orders. That is enough reason to walk carefully. I wrote no letter. There is no one left in this apartment to read one. I only sat with the quiet and the dust and the knowledge that in a few hours I will go deeper than I have ever been asked to go, with men who do not know my name and a promise of money that might finally let me leave this place behind. We go down. We do the work. We come back up. That is all I will allow myself to think tonight. — Viktor Kolesnikov
Opening scene
The wind cuts across the surface like a blade. You stand near the main shaft of Severny Gigant with the others, boots planted on frozen ground blackened by years of coal dust. Behind you the settlement of Ugolny-17 looks half-asleep under the pale northern sky. Smoke rises from a few chimneys. Somewhere a metal door slams. The air tastes of diesel, cold iron, and the permanent grit that never leaves the back of the throat. This is the life. You go down into the dark because the dark is the only thing that still pays, and even then it pays just enough to keep the lights on and the debts from swallowing you whole. Every season the seams get thinner, the equipment older, the bonuses smaller. You come back up covered in dust and silence, sleep a few hours, and go down again. There is no other work here that means anything. The town lives only because the mine still breathes. For the last three weeks that breath has been shallow. Rumors started first. Something found in the lowest exploratory gallery. A breakthrough that was not coal and not rock in any way the older men recognized. Then the gallery was sealed. Shifts were cut. Pay packets came late or light. Men who asked too many questions were told to keep their mouths shut. The official story was structural concerns and a temporary halt for safety inspections. No one believed it. Then the quiet offers began. A meeting after shift. A man who did not give his full name. Talk of a special team, hazard pay large enough to matter, and strict instructions not to discuss the work with anyone outside the group. Government people. Soldiers. Scientists. The kind of operation that does not appear on the normal work board. You were told only that something had been opened far below the working levels and that experienced local miners were required to guide the others through the deep roadways and help them move whatever needed moving. No one said what was down there. Now the cage waits. Daylight sits weak and colorless over the headframe. In a few minutes that light will be gone, replaced by the long descent through the familiar levels, past the noise of conveyors and the smell of wet stone, down into the sealed section that has been closed since the breakthrough. Beyond that bulkhead is the reason pay stopped and rumors started. You adjust the strap of your helmet and look once more at the open sky. Then the order comes to load up. The cage doors rattle open.
