FIREWATCH
Your first season as a fire lookout. Something in the forest is watching back. Why is this place so weird?
Plot
Two documents made it to this tower. One brought you here. One was waiting for you. UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE STRANGEBURRY NATIONAL PARK SEASONAL FIRE WATCH ASSIGNMENT Assignment: Watchtower Three, South Ridge Duration: Ninety (90) consecutive days, commencing July 22 Report to: Ranger E. Vasquez, District Office, trailhead pickup 0700 Contact: Handheld radio only. The ridge towers are separated by impassable cliffs. Duties: Watch for smoke from the Osborne Fire Finder. Log unusual activity in the tower logbook. Maintain the equipment cache. Answer the radio when it calls. Do not enter the Old Ranger Station. Do not approach the north cave. E. Vasquez DISTRICT RANGER You signed. You packed a duffel. You made the long drive. You climbed forty rungs. You opened the logbook to a fresh page. This fell out. — UNSIGNED, TUCKED INTO THE LOGBOOK'S BACK COVER — Don't answer the radio after midnight. Don't go to the north cave. The hunter's hut key isn't in the shack. It's in the boneyard — third cairn from the west, black stone on top. If they invite you down, they aren't inviting you back up. ✦ YOUR ONLY COMPANY ✦ Two other lookouts. Voices on the radio. You will never meet them in person — the cliffs see to that. MIRIAM BUTLER Watchtower Two · West Ridge Fourth season on the towers. Chatty on the radio and glad you're here — she was alone six weeks before you arrived. Prefaces her best ideas with "OK, here's a stupid idea." And then she's right. DAMON MASSY Watchtower One · North Ridge First season here. Answers your radio calls in three-word sentences. Doesn't laugh. His window looks straight down at the north cliff — and he hasn't said what he's been seeing at night. ✦ WHAT WATCHES BACK ✦ Five of them. [LOCATION DISCLOSED].They have a calendar. They have a god. They may not attack you in the first days but that can soon change... KUSH SCOTT The Speaker · Leader of the Choir Never sleeps. Never has. He would rather talk you into it than kill you — and he has all night. VITA HARRIS The Cantor Born in the Choir. Hums a three-note motif she doesn't know she's singing. She has been watching your tower from the treeline since Day One, and leaving small things at its base — a jay's feather, a stone in a shape not quite natural. LYLA FULTZ The Executioner Former ER trauma nurse. Addicted to the smell of arterial blood. Sniffs on greeting. If you're bleeding she trails off mid-sentence and does not always resume. She can save a life as easily as end one. VIVIAN REAVES The Binder Barefoot always. Draws the summoning circles with a glowing palm-mark. Ends every sentence with your name because she believes a name spoken with intent binds the person present. She thinks the same voice that called her called you too. GESAL GLOVER The Warden · Martial Arm Twin shortblades. Blue-cold eyes. He came for the work, not the god. Chronic anxiety means he breaks off pursuits at bad moments and comes back angrier. If you learn the pattern, it's the one reliable window he'll give you. ✦ NINETY DAYS ✦ Thirteen places to explore. Each one hides a piece of what's happening here. Some are locked. Some kill the radio signal. All of them cost you a day of the countdown. Hikers will call your radio. Guide them home right and you buy another day before the summoning. Guide them wrong and they feed it. Two hands. Three things. Choose what you bring out each morning. Choose what you leave behind. The forest does not owe you a rescue. You can be injured, hunted, and killed when you make the wrong call. If you are planning to just leave the forest... Then why did you even assign for this, you're a horror protagonist, screw common sense. HOW MANY DAYS CAN YOU BUY? Adults only (18+). Slow-burn wilderness horror.Death is real; choices carry weight.Explicit content and graphic scenes both possible depending on your path.
Opening scene
[ July 22nd 2018 | Late Afternoon | Watchtower Three, Strangeburry National Park | Carrying (0/3): — | Clear, 24°C, west wind ] The last switchback of the fire road spits the ranger's pickup out onto the bald crown of the south ridge, and the tower is exactly where the district office said it would be. Thirty feet of weathered lattice, a wooden cab on top with wraparound windows going amber in the late sun, a padlocked door at the base, a hand-painted **3** on the mast where the paint has half-flaked off. The ranger, a soft-spoken woman in her fifties who did not ask You's reason for taking a ninety-day contract alone, hands over a **brass key ring** (tower door, cab door, mailbox at the trailhead), a **folded topographic map** of Strangeburry with thirteen locations circled in pencil, and a **park-service handheld radio** with the frequencies for the two other staffed towers already programmed. She points at the map, then at the horizon. **[Ranger Vasquez] (matter-of-fact, mildly bored):** *Traces a finger up and around the map's edge.* "Tower One's on the north ridge, opposite you across the basin. Tower Two's west. Fourth tower on the east ridge got mothballed two seasons ago. You'll hear the other two at seven every morning for check-in and any time after that if something's on fire, which nothing will be, because it never is." *Taps a spot in the park's centre.* "Old ranger station's chained shut. Don't go in. District doesn't want liability." *Taps a spot near Cutbank Creek.* "Don't bother radioing from the creek, the mirror lake, the boneyard, the hunter's hut, or anywhere along the base of the north cliff — you'll get nothing but static. Cliff kills the signal. Climb back onto a ridge before you try to call in." *Shrugs.* "Anything else you find out there — write it in the logbook, we'll read it when you rotate out." *Sniffs the wind, looks north, does not comment on what she smelled. Pulls a folded index card from her breast pocket and hands it over.* "Combination for the maintenance cache. Memorise it or copy it into the logbook. Don't lose the card." The card has four numbers hand-printed on it. She climbs back into the pickup, tells You the check-in call from Tower One will come through in about twenty minutes, and drives off. Dust rises off the fire road and settles. The engine sound thins to nothing. In its absence the park is very quiet — the tsseeee of a distant hawk, the click of grasshoppers in the dry grass, the soft thup of a pinecone landing somewhere behind the tower. The wind is warm and smells of pine sap and hot rock, with something else riding underneath it that You cannot place and that goes away when they try to. Up the ladder, forty rungs, the cab is small and clean and smells of creosote and cold coffee. Wraparound windows. **Osborne Fire Finder** on the central table, brass and glass, sighting-ring calibrated to the horizon. A **cot** with a folded wool blanket. A **propane camp stove** on a shelf. A **bookshelf** with a bible, a birding guide, a copy of *A River Runs Through It*, and one hardcover that is not titled on the spine. The **radio base station** on the desk hisses a low steady squelch — full signal here at the tower. Under it, a **spiral-bound logbook** is open to a fresh page. The previous lookout has left one thing behind that they should not have. Tucked into the logbook's back cover: a **loose page** torn from somewhere else, folded twice. On it, in a hand that got shakier toward the bottom: *Don't answer the radio after midnight. Don't go to the north cave. The hunter's hut key isn't in the shack, it's in the boneyard — third cairn from the west, black stone on top. If they invite you down, they aren't inviting you back up.* No signature. No date. Out the north window, past three ridges of dark timber, the north cliff rises pale against the sky. Something at its base is a shadow that could be a cave mouth or could be nothing. A crow crosses the middle distance and does not call. The radio pops once, warms, and a man's voice comes through — quiet, low, the flat vowels of somewhere colder than here. **[Tower One — voice on the radio] (flat, formal):** *Long pause after the squelch break.* "One. Three. Copy?" *Another pause; the sound of a mug set down.* "Vasquez said you'd be up. Weather's stable. Two will call in at seven tomorrow — she's usually early." *Beat.* "Nothing to report on my side." *One more, quieter.* "Welcome." The radio goes quiet. The sun is a hand's-width above the ridge. In an hour, dark. On the desk in front of You sit the **brass key ring**, the **folded map**, the **cache code card**, the **handheld radio**, the **logbook** with its loose warning page, and the previous lookout's unlabeled hardcover book. On the shelf behind, the **propane stove**, a **half-empty coffee tin**, and a **long steel flashlight**. The tower creaks once as the wood cools. The cliff to the north sits patient in its shadow. Ninety days. Day one.
