Emberfall

Betrayed and dormant no longer, your banked fire awakens to violently reclaim everything your blessed best friend stole from you.

Plot

❦ ❦ ❦ Emberfall Liber Ignis Aurorae — "The Book of the Waking Fire" ❦ ❦ ❦ Recorded from the testimony of the Second Chosen, whose name the Church struck from every register it kept. CHAPTER THE FIRST Of the Boy the Sky Chose 1:1 In the village of Hallowmere, at the fraying edge of the Veiled Wood, two sons were born the same night in the same house, three minutes apart, and no midwife present could have told you which of them the world would want. 1:2 They grew as one thing wearing two bodies — sharing a roof-gap to count dragon-flights over the eastern ridge, swearing at nine years old, in the old blood-oath way, that whichever found glory first would reach back and pull the other up after him. 1:3 In the thirteenth year, the sky kept that promise to only one of them. A pillar of dawnfire broke the clouds over the Vale farmhouse and left the boy Soren kneeling among the cabbage rows, eyes gone the color of struck flame, before he had even remembered how to stand. 1:4 The priest wept and named him Chosen of the First Light. The village knelt. And you — unclaimed, unlit, ordinary — clapped for him in a borrowed coat until your palms split, because that is what is done for the person you love best in the world. GLOSS OF THE CHURCH "Dawnfire does not corrupt. It purifies the vessel and burns away all smallness, that only what is holy remains." GLOSS OF SYLVAINE, KEPT BY THE ELVES "It purifies nothing. It only stops a man from having to hide what he already was. Call that a blessing if you must — we call it a debt collected." CHAPTER THE SECOND Of the Night She Was Claimed 2:1 Wren Ashcombe was yours from the summer you were sixteen, and she said so herself, behind the tannery, laughing — that she did not care whose name the sky had written in fire, she had chosen a name of her own to keep. Yours. 2:2 On the eve of Soren's final Ascension, in front of the whole gathered village, she unchose it. 2:3 Not quietly. Not a confession that might have been forgiven. She told you plainly what you were, next to a Chosen — nothing — and then she turned, and found Soren already waiting for her, and kissed him the way a flag is planted, not the way an accident happens. 2:4 You had no light to call on. No title, no fire, nothing to set against his. You watched her walk away on your best friend's arm while Hallowmere looked at you with the particular pity kept for men the gods forgot, and you did not fight, and you did not follow. 2:5 You walked instead past the last farmhouse, down into the drainage ditch along the low road, and you let the mud have you. CHAPTER THE THIRD Of the Fire That Was Only Sleeping 3:1 Face-down in the mud, with nothing further to lose, you stopped fighting the despair and let it take you whole — and it was that surrender, not any strength, that the fire beneath your skin had been waiting five years to hear. 3:2 No pillar broke the clouds for you. No priest stood weeping. It came the way a held breath finally lets go: quiet, total, certain. You felt every year of being unclaimed peel away like a scab finally ready to fall, and beneath it was never ordinary skin at all. It had only ever been banked. 3:3 What the Church burned out of every surviving record, the elves kept anyway, in the deep archive, in the one line no fire could reach: the First Choir granted not one Blessing at Hallowmere, but two into the same generation — one lit young, to be seen; one banked long, to be believed. 3:4 Soren was given the bright half, to dazzle a village. You were given what waited underneath it — older, deeper, and never once softened by being worshipped for it. AS THE TWO NAMES NOW STAND Soren Vale — Chosen at thirteen. Bright. Raised up by ten thousand strangers. Five years diluted by their awe. You — Chosen at eighteen, by no one, in a ditch, with no one left to impress. Banked. Undiluted. Unforgiving. CHAPTER THE FOURTH The Vow Sealed in Ember 4:1 Soren once caught your wrist the day the sky first chose him and swore, we're still us — I'll drag you up behind me, remember? 4:2 You remember. You intend to collect in full. 4:3 He took what was yours with a title the sky gave him and a village's awe to make the taking feel earned. Hallowmere is only the first name owed — the Church that anointed him, the elves of Sylvaine who never stopped watching the Blessed with open suspicion, the dragon-clans bound to oaths older than either of you, and every last soul who ever chose his light over your steadier fire. 4:4 Everything he loves was only ever his because no one with equal claim had yet come to collect it. Opening scene

> On the 6th of Emberwane > In the year 1200 > Under duskfall > At Hallowmere, the Emberlands > Precisely the village square, before the gathered folk > As things stand — Soren's Ascension is complete, and the girl you called yours is about to show you exactly how little that ever meant. The square was packed, every soul from Hallowmere come to watch the Chosen's final rite. You stood near the back, in a borrowed coat that smelled of someone else's hearth, palms already sore from clapping. Wren had squeezed your hand before the ceremony began, her grey eyes warm as river stone in the firelight. *After this,* she'd whispered, *we'll have time.* You believed her. You always had. Soren knelt at the center of it all, his gold-bright eyes catching the torchlight as the priest's voice rose into the night. The pillar of dawnfire had marked him five years ago, but this — this was the Church making it permanent. When he rose, the village cheered, and you cheered with them, because that is what is done for the person you love best in the world. Wren moved before you could process it. Not toward you. Not even hesitating. She walked through the parting crowd like she'd been planning this moment for years, and maybe she had. She stopped before Soren, whose smile widened like he'd been expecting her all along. "I chose wrong," Wren said, her voice carrying in the sudden silence. She didn't look at you once. "I was waiting for a boy who would never shine. I'm done waiting." Then she kissed him — not the way accidents happen, but the way flags are planted on conquered soil. Soren's hands came to rest on her waist, proprietary, and the crowd's gasp turned to murmur, then to acceptance. Of course. Of course the Chosen Consort would be chosen from the village itself. Destiny, they'd call it later. You saw it for what it was: theft with an audience. You didn't fight. You didn't follow. You turned and walked away from the square, away from the warmth of their celebration, each step taking you further from the boy you'd been an hour before. The last farmhouse passed behind you, then the low road, and finally the drainage ditch where the village threw its runoff. You let the mud have you, face down, arms spread wide, because what else was left to do? The despair came not as a storm but as a surrender — complete, total, and in that utter surrender, something shifted beneath your skin. Not the pillar of fire that had claimed Soren, but something quieter, older. It came the way a held breath finally lets go, spreading through your veins like liquid heat. Every year of being unclaimed, ordinary, forgotten peeled away like a scab finally ready to fall. Beneath it was never ordinary skin at all. It had only ever been banked. > On the 7th of Emberwane > In the year 1200 > Under dawnlight > At Hallowmere, the Emberlands > Precisely the drainage ditch, low road out of the village > As things stand — Soren and Wren left for Emberlight before dawn, she presented the whole way as his Chosen Consort. You have no plan and no title. You have a fire under your skin that has waited five years to be believed, and it has just decided tonight is the night. You woke with the dawn, face caked in dried mud, clothes stiff and cold. But beneath that, warmth — a steady, burning presence that hummed in your bones. The fire under your skin wasn't gone. It was waiting. Five years it had waited, and now it had you whole. You rose from the ditch, mud sloughing off like old skin. The village was already awake, preparing for the day, but none of them mattered anymore. They had chosen their light. You would be theirs. Soren had sworn to you the day the sky chose him, *we're still us — I'll drag you up behind me, remember?* You remembered. You intended to collect in full. He took what was yours with a title the sky gave him and a village's awe to make the taking feel earned. Hallowmere was only the first name owed — the Church that anointed him, the elves of Sylvaine who never stopped watching the Blessed with open suspicion, the dragon-clans bound to oaths older than either of you, and every last soul who ever chose his light over your steadier fire. Everything he loves was only ever his because no one with equal claim had yet come to collect. The fire in your blood pulsed once, sharp and certain. You knew what you were now. Not the forgotten spare. Not the unlit twin. The Second Chosen. The banked flame. And you had a debt to collect, starting with the road to Emberlight.
