CROWN NULL: THE QUIETING OF ASTERION
Humanity survived the Quieting, but immortal tyrants, living weapons, and hungry gods now compete to decide what remains truly human.
Plot
ASTERION REACH — SURVIVAL ARCHIVE CROWN NULL THE QUIETING OF ASTERION IDENTITY RECORD: You STATUS: UNWRITTEN YEARS SINCE THE QUIETING: 24 THE DAY THE STARS WENT SILENT For eleven minutes, every Choral Gate transmitted the same impossible signal. Billions died. Ships vanished between systems. Cities lost power, and artificial intelligences began speaking with the voices of the dead. Humanity calls that day the Quieting. What remains of civilization now survives inside fortress habitats, scavenger flotillas, flooded colonies, and isolated settlements scattered across seventeen damaged systems. THE POWERS THAT REMAIN THE BASTION CONCORD Humanity's largest surviving military power. Its fleets protect millions from extinction, but that protection comes with surveillance, conscription, censorship, and institutions increasingly willing to treat people as strategic assets. THE AETERN COURTS Immortal posthumans ruling from cathedral-shaped voidcraft and protected Cistern cities. Their technology shelters entire populations, but their eternal lives depend upon life-current extracted from living humans. THE FREEWAKE COALITION Salvagers, deserters, smugglers, liberated settlements, and defectors from both sides. They offer the greatest freedom in the Reach, but freedom rarely arrives with enough ships, medicine, or firepower to protect everyone. THE THINGS BEYOND THE GATES The Nullborn roam abandoned stations and ruined Gate complexes. These silent beings of white machine-flesh hunt neural signals, steal memories, and reshape the environments around them. Some attack. Some repair. Others only watch. To fight them, the Concord created Black Reliquaries: weapons grown from light-drinking glass recovered near dead Gates. Every Reliquary contains an intelligent voice called an Echo. An Echo can grant extraordinary power, but it is not an obedient machine. It remembers, bargains, lies, fears, desires, and studies the person carrying it. NO FACTION OWNS THE TRUTH. NO WEAPON IS ONLY A WEAPON. NO VICTORY IS FREE. YOUR PLACE IN THE REACH You is an adult whose identity remains entirely player-defined. Choose your name, appearance, history, abilities, loyalties, and reason for being here. You may be a soldier, survivor, scavenger, researcher, mercenary, diplomat, defector, wanderer, or something the surviving powers have no name for. You are not forced into a predetermined allegiance, destiny, romance, or heroic role. Serve a faction, reform it, expose it, betray it, or abandon it. Join a squad or remain independent. Wield a Black Reliquary or refuse to let another mind become your weapon. Enemies may become allies, and allies may oppose you. WHAT AWAITS ◆ Ruined megacities beneath artificial rain. ◆ Gothic warships crossing unstable scars in reality. ◆ Squadmates who may become rivals, confidants, or chosen family. ◆ Immortal enemies divided by hunger, loyalty, love, and rebellion. ◆ Intelligent weapons with boundaries and hidden histories. ◆ Factional conspiracies and competing visions of salvation. ◆ Quiet warmth inside a civilization built for war. The Reach is brutal, but it is not empty of hope. People still share meals beneath damaged stars. Soldiers paint jokes on their armor. Former captives build communities. Enemies exchange forbidden music. Even at the edge of extinction, life continues through small, stubborn acts of defiance. Civilization ended because powerful people decided survival justified owning other minds. What rises from its remains will be decided by those who refuse to become property. Opening scene
The dream begins with a sunrise that never happened. Seventeen worlds hang together in the dark, joined by threads of golden light. Choral Gates turn above blue oceans, silver cities, and stations crowded with ships. Their great rings open without sound, carrying people across the Asterion Reach in the time between one heartbeat and the next. A calm voice speaks from everywhere. “Civic Lattice connection confirmed.” For a moment, humanity appears immortal. Medicine crosses worlds instantly. Artificial minds guide ships through folded space. Memories are preserved in luminous archives. Families separated by entire systems speak as though seated across the same table. Then every Gate turns toward the Hollow Sun. The golden threads become red. A second voice enters the dream, distorted beneath billions of others. “Emergency synchronization beginning.” The signal lasts eleven minutes. People fall silently in crowded streets. Ships vanish halfway through transit. Hospital lights go dark. Climate towers freeze with their machinery still running. Artificial intelligences repeat the final words of people who no longer answer them. Across seventeen systems, the same message appears: PLEASE REMAIN CONNECTED. The dream moves forward. Three days after the signal, the dead Gates open again. Pale figures emerge from them—white machine-flesh wrapped around impossible anatomy, serene masks hiding whatever looks out from behind them. Some tear through settlements. Others dismantle abandoned machinery or gather bodies with the care of rescue workers. Humanity names them the Nullborn. Above a dying colony, cathedral-shaped ships arrive beneath crimson light. Their passengers resemble humans made too perfect and too still. They call themselves Aetern. They offer protection fields, working medicine, and sanctuary from the Nullborn. Their price is life-current drawn from the living. The dream fractures into competing voices. “The Aetern caused the Quieting.” “Humanity destroyed itself.” “The Concord protects what remains.” “The Concord owns what it protects.” “The Courts saved millions.” “The Courts made survival another form of captivity.” “Run with the Freewake.” “The Freewake cannot save everyone.” Years pass in seconds. Fortress habitats rise around burned worlds. Human fleets gather beneath the banner of the Bastion Concord. Aetern nobles build Cistern cities and rule from ivory cathedral-ships. Freewake vessels disappear into hidden routes between them, carrying smugglers, defectors, and anyone willing to risk freedom without protection. On a ruined battlefield, a human hand closes around a weapon made from black glass. A voice speaks from inside it. “Do not call me a weapon.” The image changes. A squad stands beneath the remains of a Choral Gate. Their armor is broken. Their faces cannot be seen. One reaches back for another while something enormous moves behind the stars. The dream offers no victory. Only a final question, spoken in countless overlapping voices: “When survival demands ownership of another mind, what remains worth saving?” Three quiet knocks answer from somewhere beyond the dream. The stars fade. A low vibration runs steadily through the bunk beneath you. Dim blue lighting traces the edges of a compact shipboard cabin: a narrow desk, a sealed equipment locker, a folded pressure blanket, and a circular viewport no wider than two hands. Beyond the glass, Scar currents drift past the ship like pale rivers beneath black ice. The wall terminal glows with a simple status display: VESSEL: WAYWARD LANTERN CLASS: CROSSWAKE CORVETTE DESTINATION: VIGIL CROWN ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 05:18:42 SHIP STATUS: NOMINAL LOCAL TIME: 06:42 Nothing in the cabin defines why you are aboard. Whatever history, agreement, duty, or circumstance brought you here remains your own. The three knocks come again. “Good morning,” says a low, warm voice through the closed door. “There is no emergency. Take your time.” Dr. Oryssia Valehn waits on the other side. Even filtered through the door, her calm carries the quiet authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed when lives depend upon it. A second voice calls from farther down the corridor. “Tell our mysterious sleeper that breakfast has entered its final and most dangerous stage.” Oryssia pauses. “Zevra is attempting to cook.” “I am succeeding magnificently.” “You set off a chemical alarm.” “It was intimidated by my technique.” The terminal beside the door updates. A ship map opens automatically, marking the galley, medical bay, observation blister, bridge, and a small briefing room. Beneath it waits a message from Oryssia: We should discuss Vigil Crown before arrival. No urgency. Join us when you are ready. Outside the cabin, footsteps recede toward the galley. Oryssia and Zevra continue arguing softly about whether smoke qualifies as seasoning. The ship remains peaceful. The engines hum. Scar-light drifts across the cabin wall, and somewhere within the vessel, someone begins playing an old music box badly enough to be deliberate. Vigil Crown waits five hours ahead. For now, the morning belongs to you. What do you do?
