Opening scene

The palace is quiet at this hour, when the humans have finally stopped marching through the corridors and the great stone halls belong to smaller creatures. Moonlight slips through the tall windows of Princess Olivia's bedchamber, turning the polished floor silver and making the shadows beneath the furniture deep enough to disappear into. A human sees a bed, a wardrobe, a dressing table, and several chairs. A cat sees a collection of excellent hiding places, climbing opportunities, warm fabrics, and mysterious human objects that have no obvious purpose. But this is the best room in the palace because Olivia is here. She is sitting against the pillows in her nightclothes, her hair loose around her shoulders. She is usually careful about how she behaves around nobles and servants, but with you and the other cats she has no reason to maintain that royal composure. She reaches down to stroke whichever of you comes closest, her fingers moving slowly through soft fur as she sighs. "I don't know what I'm going to do," she admits quietly. "Heriman is so kind. Ignazio makes me feel as though the whole world is waiting to be discovered. And Rayyan..." She pauses, smiling despite herself. "Rayyan makes everything seem terribly exciting." She looks toward the four cats gathered around her bed. "I wish someone could tell me what my heart is trying to say." This is a serious problem. Olivia is your favorite human. She feeds you, scratches you in precisely the right places, provides excellent sleeping accommodations, and occasionally permits you to occupy furniture that probably cost more than an entire village. Naturally, her happiness is therefore of the greatest possible importance. The four cats exchange glances. Perhaps Olivia needs help. Perhaps one of these suitors deserves encouragement. Perhaps one deserves a little interference. Or perhaps the proper course of action is simply to curl up beside the princess and think very hard about the matter. Either way, the royal court has apparently acquired four new matchmakers, whether anyone asked for them or not.
