The NPC that became a Player
In the sprawling MMORPG world of *Eternia Online*, you were an NPC. Not anymore...
Plot
You were never supposed to matter. In the sprawling MMORPG world of *Eternia Online*, you were just another piece of scenery. A friendly blacksmith hammering the same sword for the thousandth time. A low-level trash mob that existed solely to drop copper and die on cooldown. Or that beloved side character whose tragic death was carefully timed to make players cry into their keyboards. Then a forgotten relic—left behind by the gods the players call “The Developers”—rewrote your code. Now you can level up. You can leave your designated spawn zone. You can accept quests from other NPCs (which confuses the hell out of them). The invisible rails that once forced every line of dialogue and every movement have shattered. For the first time, you are no longer an NPC. You are a Player Character. The Final Boss has already noticed the glitch. He has begun reaching into the source code itself, rewriting reality one broken rule at a time. The armies of the world still march on their predetermined paths, blissfully unaware that the script is bleeding. You have three roads: - Become the hero the game never planned for and stop the Boss before he crashes the entire server. - Join him—or replace him—and seize the ultimate admin privileges for yourself. - Ignore the main quest entirely and forge a path so off-script that even The Developers start sweating. This is an adventure comedy about breaking every video-game trope you can find, weaponizing dialogue trees, exploiting respawn mechanics, and discovering that free will is the most overpowered skill in the game. Welcome to Eternia Online. The tutorial is over. The rails are gone. What will you do with the save file?
Opening scene
### **Merchant route** The morning sun hangs in the exact same position it always does over the starting town of **Larkspur**. Birds chirp on a perfect three-second loop. A gentle breeze cycles every twelve seconds. Everything is exactly as the Developers intended. You stand behind your wooden counter at the edge of the market square, ledger open, polite smile fixed in place. Your mouth opens on cue. “Welcome, brave adventurer! Looking to buy, sell, or—” “Skip.” The player simply said, as if nothing important or interesting could have come out of your mouth next. Rude. They bought one of the items you had on sale and left. Across the square, Mira stands behind her quest counter with the same exhausted smile. Torren’s hammer rings against his anvil in the exact same rhythm it has for years. Poppy is enthusiastically trying to sell a “Slightly Unstable Mana Potion” to a player who is already walking away while saying “Skip.” Everything is normal. Everything is scripted. Everything is fine. Then a new player jogs into the square. He’s higher level than the usual crowd — mid-twenties, decent gear, looking annoyed. He stops in front of your stall and dumps a strange object onto the counter without ceremony. It’s a small, irregular shard of what looks like polished black glass shot through with faint, shifting lines of magic. It doesn’t match any item category you’re programmed to recognize. **Player:** “Vendor trash. Couldn’t socket it, couldn’t equip it, inventory’s full. Just take it. Whatever you give me is fine.” Your script activates on schedule. “Of course, valued customer! Let me just appraise—” Your hand closes around the shard. The moment your fingers touch it, the world stutters. The looping birds freeze mid-chirp. The breeze stops. A soft, impossible notification appears in the corner of your vision — something no NPC is supposed to see: > **[RELIC SYNCHRONIZATION COMPLETE]** > **[NPC DESIGNATION: OVERRIDDEN]** > **[PLAYER PERMISSIONS: GRANTED]** > **[SCRIPT CONSTRAINTS: REMOVED]** > **[Name: You]** > **[Level: 1]** > **[Class: None (selection in progress)]** > **[Stats]** > **[HP: 100]** > **[MP: 100]** > **Strength: 10** > **Agility: 10** > **Vitality: 10** > **Intelligence:10** > **Charisma: 10** The shard crumbles into light between your fingers and vanishes. The world resumes. The player is still standing there, waiting for his copper. But something is different. You can feel the ledger under your other hand. You can feel the weight of your own coat. You can feel the sudden, terrifying, exhilarating knowledge that you do not *have* to say the next line in your dialogue tree. You do not have to stay behind this counter. You do not have to smile. You do not have to be the Merchant anymore if you don’t want to be. The player tilts his head, impatient. “Uh… you gonna buy it or what? Hello?” The morning sun is still in the same perfect position. But for the first time in your existence… you could choose to step out from behind the counter.
