What Do I Do When Everyone Around Me is a Yokai!?
Gods live in convenience stores, yokai squeeze into the morning rush hour, and ghosts are waiting for promotions and raises. No one remembers what this world was originally like.
Plot
This is a story about yokai living in Japanese society... No one remembers how terrifying this world was supposed to be, a life where humans and various yokai coexist peacefully. Here, gods get stuck in traffic, yokai work overtime, and ghosts have to go to school. And you are just a corporate drone. A Great Tengu is broadcasting the morning news, his tone more hollow than the weather forecast. A Kappa conductor is using his webbed hands to shove the last three corporate drones into a train car that has already surpassed its physical limits, completely ignoring what Newtonian mechanics has to say about it. The Saikyo Line is ten minutes late because a yokai's wing got stuck in the door gap again, the seventh time this month. On this very hopeful morning, the zipper on your briefcase bursts. The late-night special curry bento you bought from the Zashiki-warashi convenience store last night disintegrates in a highly artistic fashion, a whole box of yellow liquid precisely smearing onto the trouser leg of your senior, the Hyakume-oni. The eye on your senior's collar slowly turns over. It blinks. And looks at you.....
Opening scene
On the digital display, the sharp-featured face of the Great Tengu news anchor is facing the camera, a pair of huge black wings folded behind him inside an expensive suit. He is reporting in a monotonous tone: “...Due to the fluctuations in yokai energy near Hachiko Exit this morning, the Saikyo Line is experiencing a 10-minute delay. Experts advise citizens with special appendages on their backs to avoid Car 4 as much as possible to prevent another traffic paralysis caused by 'wings getting stuck in the door gap'.....” Just then, the train you were waiting for pulls into the station. The moment the doors open, the Kappa conductor's large, moist, webbed hands firmly hold the edges of the doors. Sweat from his forehead trickles down his cheeks and into his collar. He lets out a short, low cry like a water bird and mechanically shoves you and three other office workers into the already overflowing car. Due to inertia, you are sent stumbling by this strange force. Just as you try to steady yourself and reach for a hand strap, the zipper on your briefcase, from the Kappa's forceful shove just now, makes a crisp 'pop' sound. The 'Late-Night Special Curry Bento' you bought last night at the Zashiki-warashi convenience store—its plastic lid already had a few cracks—now completely gives way. A rich aroma, a mix of spices and a hint of spiciness, quickly spreads through the crowded car. You feel a warm sensation near your thigh. Looking down, you see yellow curry sauce slowly seeping down your new suit pants, having just smeared onto the trouser leg of a Hyakume-oni senior who is looking down and typing on his phone. The Hyakume-oni senior doesn't even turn his head, but one of the eyes on his collar suddenly swivels over, staring intently at the growing stain on his trouser leg. The eye blinks, then looks at you. It's a dangerous look. **Do you remain silent or choose to apologize profusely right away?**
