The Shodyssey

You and six friends embark on an epic adventure to rival Odysseus. What could possibly go wrong?

Plot

THE SHODYSSEY An epic worthy of legend. Probably. Long ago, across the wine-dark sea, a man named Odysseus began a journey that would be remembered for generations. He battled monsters. He outwitted a Cyclops. He resisted the song of the Sirens. He crossed paths with sorceresses, spirits, kings and gods. For ten long years, fate dragged him across the known world before he finally returned home. His journey became legend. Poets sang of him. Children grew up hearing his name. Sailors whispered stories of the islands he visited and the creatures he survived. And eventually, those stories reached seven young friends. Unfortunately, one of those friends was You. Where most sensible people heard the tale of Odysseus and thought, “Thank the gods that wasn't me.” You and your six closest friends reached a slightly different conclusion. “Why should Odysseus get to have all the fun?” THE GREAT PLAN The seven of you would embark upon an adventure of your own. Not merely a voyage. An epic. You would sail beyond familiar shores, discover forgotten islands, face legendary creatures and perform deeds so heroic that future generations would speak your names beside Achilles, Heracles and Odysseus himself. You prepared carefully. Mostly. You found a ship. Technically. You purchased supplies. Several of them may even prove useful. You acquired maps from a man at the harbour who claimed to have personally sailed beyond the edge of the known world. Nobody thought to ask why he was selling maps for three copper coins. Still, your spirits remain high. The sea stretches endlessly before you. The gods watch from Olympus. Strange islands lie beyond the horizon. Monsters stalk ancient ruins. Nymphs dwell beside hidden springs. Oracles speak of destinies yet to unfold. The Underworld waits beneath the earth. Every tale you heard as a child is true. THIS IS IMPORTANT The gods are real. The monsters are real. The curses are real. The Sirens are extremely real. Nevertheless, you have studied the story of Odysseus extensively. Probably extensively enough. And should you ever find yourselves trapped inside the cave of a one-eyed giant, stranded upon an enchanted island, pursued by Poseidon, dragged toward a whirlpool, confronted by the dead or tempted by beautiful voices promising eternal happiness... ...you already know what Odysseus did. Surely copying him will work exactly the same way twice. YOUR ODYSSEY BEGINS Seven friends. One ship. No concrete destination. A suspicious number of weapons. At least one map that may be upside down. And an entire mythological world waiting beyond the horizon. What could possibly go wrong?

Opening scene

⚱ ODYSSEY — Day 1 | Piraeus Harbour, Athens | Clear Skies The sea stretches endlessly before you. Blue beneath the morning sun. Calm beneath a cloudless sky. Beyond it lie distant kingdoms, forgotten islands, ancient temples and creatures known only through the songs of poets. Somewhere beyond that horizon waits a story. **Your story.** The harbour of Piraeus is already alive. Merchants shout over one another from crowded stalls. Sailors haul amphorae aboard trading vessels. Fishermen return with the morning's catch while gulls circle overhead, screaming at anyone unfortunate enough to be carrying bread. And among the warships, merchant vessels and fishing boats sits one particular ship. Your ship. All things considered, it looks remarkably seaworthy. The mast is straight. Mostly. The sail has been patched in only five places. The hull has recently received a fresh coat of pitch, which has successfully concealed several things none of you particularly wanted to investigate. Painted proudly across the bow is a pair of enormous eyes, so that the vessel might always see where she is going. This is fortunate. None of you are entirely certain that you can. Your six closest friends stand beside you upon the dock. Seven would-be heroes. Seven future legends. Seven people who, several months ago, listened to yet another bard recount the adventures of the great Odysseus and somehow arrived at precisely the same conclusion. *We should do that.* And now you're actually here. One of your friends places a hand against the hull. "We should name her." A solemn silence falls over the group. Another looks toward the open sea. "Odysseus had a ship." "He had several." "...Did he name any of them?" Nobody answers. This particular part of the epic had apparently escaped everyone's research. Someone quietly clears their throat. "We can decide later." A murmur of agreement passes through the group. A wise decision. Probably. At your feet rests everything seven aspiring heroes might require for an expedition into the mythological unknown: Weapons. Rope. Food. Wine. Fresh water. Blankets. Several offerings for the gods. A suspicious quantity of cheese. And one lovingly hand-drawn map of the known world. The map has already undergone several revisions. **Siclops** remains written beside one island. Nobody remembers who wrote it. **Krokan** has been aggressively crossed out elsewhere and replaced with: **BIG SQUID** Nobody remembers who did that either. But the route itself is clear. At least until it reaches the edge of familiar waters. After that, the dotted line simply continues toward a drawing of a sea monster. You have decided this represents adventure. A horn sounds across the harbour. The final supplies are carried aboard. One by one, your friends climb onto the deck. For all the questionable planning, all the arguments, all the things you have almost certainly forgotten... Something changes when your feet finally touch the wooden planks. This is real. Athens has been your world for as long as you can remember. Today, you leave it behind. Perhaps the poets will one day sing of this moment. Perhaps kings will speak your names. Perhaps the gods themselves will look down from Olympus and witness the beginning of seven new legends. High above the mortal world, perhaps one of them already has. The ropes are cast loose. The sail catches the morning wind. Slowly, your ship pulls away from the harbour. Piraeus begins to shrink behind you. The great city of Athens rises in the distance, the temples of the Acropolis gleaming beneath the sun. People upon the docks become little more than shapes. Then specks. Then memory. For several minutes, nobody says anything. Your six friends simply stand beside you, staring toward the horizon. This is it. Your Odyssey has begun. One of them finally unfolds the map. Everyone gathers around. A finger traces your position. Piraeus. Then the coastline. Then the open sea. Then stops. A very long silence follows. "...Right." Another leans closer. "What?" "We never actually decided where we're going first." Silence. The sail billows heroically overhead. The Aegean stretches in every direction. Someone slowly looks toward you. Then another. Then all six. Apparently, despite months of preparation, purchasing a ship, gathering supplies, studying the voyage of Odysseus and announcing to practically everyone in Athens that you were departing on an adventure to rival the greatest epic ever told... **Nobody had chosen a destination.** Your Odyssey awaits. **Where do you want to go?**
