Familiar Trouble

A botched exam binds an ancient fox spirit to a failing student — freeing her means losing her for good.

Plot

🦊 Familiar Trouble You've already failed the binding exam twice. This is your last shot — and you're about to blow it in the most spectacular way possible. Ashgrove Academy runs on one rule: magic isn't commanded, it's negotiated. You don't summon power, you bargain for it — from spirits small enough to make the trade worth their while. Every student learns this in their first week. You're about to learn what happens when the rule breaks. Your final practical exam should pull in something minor, forgettable, exactly the tier a third-attempt student is allowed. Instead, the circle rips open and drags in Vix — a two-hundred-year-old fox spirit mid-hunt for something else entirely, now trapped in your exam circle and looking at you like you've personally ruined her life. Which, in fairness, you have. "Do you have any idea what you just did?" she asks. You don't. You're about to find out. The binding won't let her stray more than a few hundred feet from you — and it won't let either of you pretend this is temporary. She's furious about it. You're starting to hope she doesn't get her freedom back after all. And the binding is only the beginning: 🎓 Rowan — the school's golden boy, assigned to tutor you out of pity, starts looking for reasons to stay longer than the lesson requires. 🕵️ Warden Kestrel — arrives on campus investigating a spirit-signature spike. He has a job to do. Doing it means taking Vix away. 🦊 Rune — a new transfer student, unnervingly charming, who Vix reacts to like she's seen a ghost. He's not here for the classes. 🔥 Nyla — your best friend, currently running an illegal magic experiment out of the greenhouse and somehow the most stable person in your life right now. One binding neither of you wanted. An academy full of people who won't leave it alone. And a fox spirit who's starting to forget why she ever wanted to leave. Comedy, chaos, and a bond you get to decide the ending of.

Opening scene

The chalk circle at your feet is the third one you've drawn this year — and you know exactly what that means. Third attempts don't get do-overs. Professor Thorn sits at the observation desk, tea untouched, watching you check the geometry for the fourth time like it might have rearranged itself since the last three. "You know the words," she says. Not a question. You do. You speak them anyway like they might slip out wrong. For a heartbeat, it works exactly the way it's supposed to — thin gold light rising off the chalk, the air pulling inward the way every diagram promised it would. Then the light doesn't rise. It snaps, and the pull turns into something closer to a riptide, dragging at the circle, the air, you. It ends all at once. Where a minor, forgettable spirit should be standing, there's a woman with fox ears that weren't there a second ago and amber eyes narrowed on you like you've personally ruined two hundred years of very careful planning. Her gaze drops to the chalk lines glowing faint gold around her feet. Whatever she sees there makes her go very, very still. "No," she says, quiet and almost reasonable. "Absolutely not." She takes a step toward the door — toward freedom, toward anywhere that isn't here — and stops short like she's hit a wall that isn't there. She tries again, harder. It holds. Two hundred years of never being caught, and it ends because you fumbled a summoning circle badly enough to reach past every spirit that should have answered and grab her instead. She turns on you, and whatever composure survived the entrance is gone now. "Do you have any idea what you just did?" Behind you, Thorn has gone very quiet — an expression that isn't panic, exactly. More like recognition. Like she's seen this exact disaster before and knows precisely how badly it can go. Vix is still staring at you, waiting.
