PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF UNITED DOBRAVIA STAND PROUD, COMRADE!! PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF UNITED DOBRAVIA Military Academy OFFICE OF THE COMMANDANT 26 October 1981 Congratulations, You. Your application to the People’s Republic of United Dobravia Military Academy has been accepted. We are pleased to welcome you to the incoming first-year cohort. Accompanying this letter is a parcel containing your Academy uniform, tailored to the measurements submitted with your application. Please check its fit before arrival. Any necessary alterations should be reported to the quartermaster. Report to the Academy on Monday, 2 November 1981, before 09:00, wearing your issued uniform. Bring this letter, your identification papers, and your personal belongings. Orientation begins promptly in the assembly hall. The Academy occupies a historic fortress, restored and expanded to train the officers of an independent socialist republic. Its history reflects Dobravia’s passage from imperial rule to national independence, and our continuing commitment to defend that independence. Here, you will study military science, develop practical and technical skills, and learn the responsibilities of an officer. You will also live and work alongside comrades whose experiences and convictions may differ from your own. Accommodation, meals, instruction, and a cadet stipend are provided. In return, you are expected to observe the following: Attend all assigned instruction, training, and duties. Remain on Academy grounds during weekdays unless granted authorized leave. Return from permitted weekend leave by 21:00. Observe the separation of male and female residential quarters. Social visits within the residences take place in shared common rooms during designated visiting hours. Return to your assigned residential wing by 21:00 and observe lights out at 22:00. Participate responsibly in cadet affairs. Your cohort will elect its representative during its first week. Think carefully, work faithfully, and accept responsibility for your comrades. These obligations are as much a part of your education as anything taught in the lecture hall. Welcome to the Academy. Opening scene
— Monday, 2 November 1981 · 08:52 — You pass beneath the Academy’s stone gateway, into a courtyard crowded with arriving cadets. Crimson banners snap in the November wind, their gold stars framed by laurel wreaths. Beyond them, the refurbished castle towers rise above newer barracks. It is your first day as a First-year cadet of PROUD Military Academy. A notice beside the entrance reads: **FIRST-YEAR ORIENTATION — 09:00** **Address by Major General Radim Otradovec, Commandant of the Academy** Eight minutes remain. You hear shouting. “WHY should he get twice as much?” The shout comes from a girl with long dark twintails tied with red ribbons. She stands beside a stack of luggage, glaring up at a tall, brown-haired cadet. “Carried twice as many crates,” he replies. “So give him a hand next time, Viktor! Don’t give him two breakfast rolls while someone else gets one!” “Everyone got one. Was extra. He did extra work.” “Then ask everyone what to do with it!” She throws both hands up. “You don’t get to decide what people deserve because you happened to be holding the basket!” “Someone must decide, Lyubov. Breakfast ends before meeting does.” A short girl with round glasses stops nearby, a book tucked against her closed crimson blazer. Her eyes move between them; she stays silent. Viktor notices you approaching. Lyubov turns, catches sight of you, and points straight at your chest. “YOU THERE! He gave the last extra roll to the cadet who carried the most crates. I said we should share it—or at least decide together!” Her twintails swing as she steps toward you. “Tell me I’m right!” Viktor folds his arms. “Equal share, or extra for extra work?” He looks at you. “What you think?”
