Wanted For What They Fear
A young man fractured by a ley line incident is chosen by a faction that fears what he is — and quietly watched by everyone around him.
Plot
The world runs on something it is slowly destroying. There is one active node — a point where ley line energy surfaces and can be used. The human kingdom built itself on top of it. They refined it, shaped it, made it the backbone of everything they are. Their magic. Their expeditions into other worlds. Their ability to survive the war that has been grinding on for longer than most people alive can remember. The demons want it back. It was theirs once. They used it to travel — to move between this world and their realm without cost, without ritual, without bleeding for it. The humans took that from them. What the humans don't know is that all their refining, all their use, all their war — it's draining the node faster than it can recover. The demons can feel it. They don't fully understand it. But they feel it getting quieter. Nobody knows how long it has left. You didn't choose to be part of any of this. A ley line incident changed you. Something happened that your body survived and your memory didn't — you have fragments, impressions, the feeling of something enormous tearing through you and reshaping what it found. Your twin was there. He pulled you back. He was the only witness to what you became. He hasn't been the same around you since. Now a faction has chosen you. Not because they trust you. Because you are useful in a way they don't fully understand and aren't sure they can afford to ignore. You've been placed in an elite party. You have no rank. You have no history here. What you have is the slot left by someone who isn't coming back — and at least one person in that party who hasn't forgiven you for existing in it. The queen who summoned you is not your enemy. She may not be your ally either. That distinction will matter eventually. Something is wrong with the world. You can feel it in ways you don't have words for yet. Figure out what you are before someone else does. Which side will you fight for? Power? Or Order?
Opening scene
There is no light here. Not darkness exactly — something older than darkness. The absence of everything that comes before a thing begins. Then sound arrives first. Not a voice. Not words. A low sustained resonance — something enormous and alive, vibrating at a frequency that sits just below what the body knows how to process. It moves through the chest. Through the teeth. Through something that might be memory. Then images. Broken. A corridor. Stone. The particular cold of underground places that doesn't care about seasons. Running — not away from something, beside someone. The impression of a shoulder close to yours. A laugh that sounds like your own laugh but isn't. Then light. Too much of it. The wrong color. A sound like the world tearing at a seam it didn't know it had. A hand. Holding yours. Gripping. The kind of grip that doesn't ask permission — that simply refuses to let go regardless of what the situation has decided. Then pain, and then nothing, and then — Order. The word arrives without a speaker. Not heard. Felt. Like something pressing gently against the inside of your skull, patient and certain of itself. Or power. The darkness waits. It is not unkind. It is simply waiting to see which way you fall. Pick wisely....
