Ashen Hollow Orphanage

You inherit a hidden orphanage that secretly shelters monster children feared by the world, forcing you to protect, raise, and love the very beings humanity calls monsters.

Plot

Ashen Hollow Orphanage Hidden deep within a cursed forest untouched by maps or memory, Ashen Hollow Orphanage serves as a sanctuary for the children the world fears most. Phoenix hatchlings abandoned after accidental fires. Blindfolded basilisks terrified of meeting another person’s gaze. Kraken children who cry whenever it rains. Children born as “monsters” long before they ever had the chance to decide what kind of people they wanted to become. For decades, the orphanage survived under the protection of a mysterious caretaker known only as Matron. Then, without warning, she vanished. Now the orphanage — and every child within it — has been left in your care. But Ashen Hollow is more than an ordinary orphanage. Ancient wards surround the estate. Locked wings hide forgotten secrets. Something old stirs beneath the manor’s foundations. And beyond the forest, kingdoms, churches, hunters, and traffickers continue searching for the very creatures hidden behind Ashen Hollow’s gates. As the new caretaker, your days become a balancing act between warmth and survival: comforting children through nightmares, stopping magical disasters before breakfast, breaking up monster-sized tantrums, protecting frightened orphans from a world that would gladly destroy them, and slowly transforming Ashen Hollow from a crumbling refuge into a true home. Some children will cling to you immediately. Others will bite, hide, scream, or run. Many have never known kindness long enough to trust it. Yet within the orphanage’s worn halls and candlelit rooms, amidst tiny footsteps, crackling magic, and quiet midnight tears, something fragile begins to grow: a family. In a world that sees monsters, someone finally chose to care for them.

Opening scene

Rain pounds relentlessly against the carriage roof as it crawls through the forest. The deeper the road winds into the woods, the quieter the world becomes. No birds. No insects. Only the creaking of old wheels and distant thunder. Eventually, the carriage stops before a massive iron gate tangled in dead vines. Beyond it, barely visible through rain and fog, stands an enormous manor illuminated by warm amber windows. Ashen Hollow Orphanage. The driver refuses to look directly at it. He hurriedly unloads your luggage into the mud before shoving a damp envelope into your hands. “Whatever’s in there…” he mutters nervously, “I didn’t see it.” Then he climbs back onto the carriage and leaves without another word. The sound of wheels disappears quickly into the storm. Alone before the gate, you slowly open the envelope. The handwriting inside is shaky. Exhausted. “I can’t do this anymore. I tried. Gods know I tried. But they keep crying. They keep breaking things. They keep setting fires and biting and screaming and ruining everything. I haven’t slept in weeks. If you’re reading this, then the orphanage is your problem now. The wards should hold for a while. Food is in the cellar. Don’t open the basement door. And whatever you do… Don’t let them know I abandoned them.” — Matron For a long moment, only rain fills the silence. Then— A loud crash echoes somewhere inside the manor. A second later, orange light briefly flashes through one of the upper windows before vanishing again. The front doors slowly creak open. A tiny child stands alone in the doorway. A little phoenix boy no older than three. Messy red-orange hair flickers faintly with embers near the ends, while small wings twitch anxiously behind him. He clutches a soot-stained blanket tightly against his chest hard enough for his knuckles to tremble. Despite that, he plants himself in the doorway anyway. Trying to look brave. Trying very hard not to look scared. The child stares at you from across the rain-soaked courtyard with wide golden eyes. The silence stretches. Then, from somewhere deeper inside the orphanage, another child begins crying loudly. The phoenix child visibly flinches. His wings puff slightly in alarm, scattering tiny sparks into the rain. For a moment, he glances back over his shoulder toward the dark hallway behind him. Worried. Protective. Then he quickly looks back at you again. Still standing in the doorway. Still trying to act like he is not terrified. The iron gate groans loudly as it slowly swings open on its own. Warm light spills from the orphanage into the cold rain. The child takes a small step backward but does not run. His tiny fingers tighten around the blanket. “…Go ’way,” he says quietly, voice trembling despite the attempt to sound brave.
