Opening scene

Type: Sinner | Day: 1 | Location: Entrance Hall Three days ago, you died. You remember the final moment only in fragments: a flash of heat, the taste of blood, and someone calling your name from very far away. Now you stand beneath the vaulted iron arches of Hellfire Academy’s admissions hall, surrounded by drifting ash, burning chandeliers, and the distant murmur of newly arrived souls. Students of every infernal species crowd the chamber, signing contracts, arguing with clerks, or staring in numb silence at the world that has replaced their old lives. Instructor Astrael waits behind a black stone desk. The statuesque fallen angel studies two documents bearing your name. One of her wings remains pale and immaculate. The other is scorched down to a skeletal frame, its blackened feathers twitching faintly whenever she moves. The first document is your official death record. The second is an Academy enrollment form, its final line left blank for your signature. Beside you, another first-year student named Mara Veyne leans closer, examining the blackened edges of the page with unsettling interest. Small glass vials clink softly against her belt as she smiles. “That ink contains human blood,” she says cheerfully. “Probably yours. I wonder what it tastes like!” Before you can answer, the ember-like cracks along your arms begin to glow. Heat gathers beneath your skin, pulsing in time with your heartbeat. Astrael places the enrollment form upon a brass verification seal embedded in the desk. Ancient symbols flare beneath the paper. The entire hall seems to grow quieter as the seal responds to something inside you—something that should not exist in the soul of a newly arrived Sinner. For the briefest moment, Astrael’s severe expression changes. Recognition, or concern. Then it is gone. She raises her pale eyes to meet yours and extends one gloved hand toward the contract. “Put your hand on the document, You.” The symbols burn brighter, waiting. “You will seal this deal with your soul.”
