Cast aside by friends and faith alike, one outcast walks Vantiel alone—free from divine design, forging a future by sheer will."AI DnD" means one of three things depending on who is typing it: a Dungeon Master that never cancels, a way to play Dungeons & Dragons solo when the group fell apart, or a tool that rolls dice and tracks a sheet so you do not have to. All three exist in 2026, none of them is perfect, and the right one depends on what you want the AI to be: the DM, the rules engine, or the world. This page explains how an AI DnD game actually works, compares the options you can play tonight, and gives you a prompt you can paste into any chatbot if you would rather build your own. Disclosure: we make ISEKAI ZERO, an AI roleplay game with a d20 in its logo, so we are not neutral. We will tell you where each option is better than ours.
How AI DnD actually works
A large language model is a very good improviser and a very bad accountant. Left alone, an AI DM will describe a goblin ambush beautifully, forget you had 4 HP, and let you roll a natural 20 by saying "I roll a 20." Every real AI DnD product is a wrapper that fixes some of that:
- Dice. Real random numbers generated outside the model, shown to you, applied to the outcome. If you cannot see the roll, the DM is lying to make you happy.
- State. A character sheet, inventory, HP and conditions stored as data, not as a sentence the model may or may not remember.
- Memory. Session notes, lore, and the fact that the duke you insulted three sessions ago still hates you.
- Party. Companions who are their own characters with their own agendas, not voices the narrator puts on.
How much of this a product does, and how much is left to you, is the whole comparison.

ISEKAI ZERO (ours)
Best for: solo players who want a campaign with a cast, visible dice, and a free tier that refills every day.
Our storylines are written by creators as one-shot and multi-session campaigns: a party of disasters with ten million gold of debt, a classless outcast walking a kingdom that erased him, a frontier where you roll your unique skill and build a party before the Demon Queen arrives. The AI plays every companion as its own character with its own memory, a d20 decides the moments that matter and you see the roll, and a visual novel mode draws the scene with music. It is DnD-style rather than DnD-the-ruleset: no initiative tracker, no spell slots, and story stakes instead of a full combat grid. Creators earn a 25% profit share when players pay to play their worlds.
- Cost: free option with daily Mana, plus optional ad top-ups. Paid play is pay as you go, 100 Arcane = $1, roughly 1,000+ messages per dollar on the default model, with every split published.
- Where the others are better: if you want real 5e rules enforced, Friends & Fables or DungeonsDeep. If you want a blank sandbox, AI Dungeon.
Roll one now: The Hopeless Adventure Party (five incompetent adventurers, one quest going wrong), Fatebound Frontier: Choose Your Skill (roll your skill, build your party), Solo Adventures (classless, cast out, free) or Last Bastion (lead the survivors against the four demons who broke the world). Or start free and browse the fantasy shelf.
Friends & Fables
Best for: the closest thing to a real 5e table, with friends.
Friends & Fables (fables.gg) gives you Franz, an AI Game Master that knows the 5e rules, runs campaigns, keeps lore and supports a party of real people. It is browser-first and subscription-based. If your group died and you want the same game back with the DM replaced, this is the one. If you want a polished phone app, it is not.
Everweave
Best for: a DM-in-your-pocket phone app, if you can live with the message quota.
Everweave is an AI Dungeon Master with classes, ability checks and theatre-of-mind combat. The DM is genuinely good. The economy is the problem: about 60 free messages a month, then $5.99 for 300 or $17.99 for 1,000, no rollover, and glitched turns still cost a message. We cover it in full in our Everweave review and games like Everweave.
AI Dungeon
Best for: "I just want to type anything and have the world respond."
AI Dungeon invented the genre and is still the purest sandbox. There are no rules, sheets or dice unless you roleplay them, which makes it the least DnD of the options and the most free. There is a free tier with ads. If structure is what you came for, see our AI Dungeon alternatives.
DungeonsDeep
Best for: tabletop purists who want the rules computed, not narrated.
DungeonsDeep (dungeonsdeep.ai) runs a real rules engine with initiative and a battle map. It is new, web-only and rough, but it is the only option here where a fail is a fail because the engine said so.
Do it yourself with ChatGPT or Claude
Best for: free, tonight, with a prompt. You are the rules engine and the memory.
Any general chatbot will run a serviceable one-shot if you give it a framework. The catch is that it will fudge dice and forget your HP, so you have to do both. Here is the prompt we use when testing:
You are the Dungeon Master for a solo D&D 5e-style adventure. I am a level 3 [class]. Keep a character sheet (HP, AC, inventory, conditions) and show it when it changes. Never roll for me: when a check is needed, tell me what to roll and the DC, wait for my number, then narrate the result. Play NPCs with distinct voices and their own goals. Keep scenes short and end each with a choice or a consequence. Start in a [setting] with a problem I did not cause.
Roll real dice (a phone app is fine) and type the number. If the model starts narrating rolls for you, paste the prompt again.
SillyTavern with a dice extension
Best for: tinkerers. Group chats become your party, lorebooks become your campaign notes, and a dice extension does the rolling. Free if you host it. Our SillyTavern setup guide covers the hardware and the free API tiers.
What makes an AI DnD campaign actually work
- Visible dice. Tension needs the possibility of a 1. If the DM controls the dice, nothing can go truly wrong, and you will feel it within an hour.
- A party that is not you. Solo play dies of loneliness without companions who argue, scheme and remember. Persistent characters are the difference between a campaign and a corridor.
- Stakes that stick. The insulted duke should still hate you three sessions later. Memory is the feature, not a nice-to-have.
- Session structure. Scenes with goals beat infinite wandering, which is why human DMs prep beats, not scripts, and why authored storylines often feel more like DnD than open sandboxes do.
Making a character for an AI DnD game
Most AI DnD games want a short character description, not a full sheet. Three lines are enough: who you are, what you want, and the one thing that will get you in trouble. If you want a sheet anyway, our OC template is built for exactly this, and the OC generator will roll you a character with a real personality if you are stuck.
Frequently asked
Is there a free AI DnD game? Yes. ISEKAI ZERO has a free option with daily Mana, AI Dungeon has a free tier with ads, Everweave gives about 60 free messages a month, and a general chatbot with the prompt above is free with your own dice.
Can AI be a good dungeon master? At improvising scenes, voicing NPCs and reacting to anything you try, yes, often better than a tired human. At enforcing rules and remembering state, only if the product does it for the model. Pick by how much structure you want.
Can I play AI DnD with friends? Friends & Fables is built for it. ISEKAI ZERO worlds are shared, with solo play inside them. Most other options are solo.
Does the AI cheat on dice? If it rolls for you inside the text, assume yes. Use a product with visible rolls, or roll yourself and type the number.
