Status AI went from stealth launch to one of the most talked-about AI apps of 2026 — 3 million+ Android installs, a $17M funding round, and a TikTok feed full of people getting "cancelled" by fictional characters. This is the full review: what it actually is, what it costs to really play, and what its own players say in 2026. Full disclosure up front: we're the ISEKAI ZERO team, we make an AI roleplay game, and we'll be fair anyway — Status is doing something genuinely new.

What is Status AI?

Status ("status – sims but social media", by New York startup WishRoll) is an AI social-media simulator — The Sims, but the thing being simulated is a social network. You create a persona (yourself, an original character, or a fandom identity), and the app builds a fake feed around you: AI versions of celebrities and fictional characters follow you, reply to your posts, DM you, start drama with you. Play well and you go viral; play badly and you get cancelled — by bots, which is somehow still stressful.

It launched in January 2025, hit a million users in about a month, and raised $17M in May 2026. On Google Play it sits at 4.1★ from over 500,000 ratings. The fandom range is the real draw: hundreds of communities, from My Hero Academia to Harry Potter, with AI casts that remember how you've treated them.

What's genuinely good

• The concept. Nobody else does the fame-simulation loop. Watching a feed react to you is a different feeling from chatting with one bot.
• Fandom breadth. Hundreds of fandoms with big AI casts, not one character at a time.
• The AI holds up. Even critical reviews concede the characters feel surprisingly human.

The catch: energy, coffee, and a lot of ads

Almost everything you do in Status — posting, replying, DMing, triggering events — spends from an energy bar. When it's empty, your options are: wait (reviewers call the refill slow), watch ads, or pay — the app sells "coffee" and gems to keep you going. That's the business model, and it's why the app is free to install.
