What Does OOC Mean? Out of Character, Explained — in Roleplay, Fanfic, Texting (and the Anime App)
Stories you can play right now
OOC means "out of character." It's one of the oldest terms in roleplay and fandom, and it means slightly different things depending on where you see it. Here's every context — plus the anime app that recently took the name (if that's what you're looking for, jump here).
OOC in roleplay: talking as yourself
In any roleplay — Discord RP, forum RP, GTA RP servers, tabletop — everything you write is normally IC (in character): your character speaking and acting. OOC is the escape hatch: words from you, the player.
You mark it so nobody confuses the two:
- ((double parentheses)) — the classic
- OOC: prefix — "OOC: gotta sleep, continue tomorrow?"
- // slashes — common on Discord
What OOC is for: scheduling, clarifying ("wait, is the door locked?"), consent and boundaries ("ok if this gets dark?"), and defusing confusion before it ruins a scene. Roleplay etiquette in one line: keep IC and OOC cleanly separated, and never punish a character for something you learned OOC — that's called metagaming.
OOC in fanfiction: characters acting wrong
In fanfic, OOC is a description (and an AO3/Wattpad tag): a character behaving in ways their canon self wouldn't — a gentle character written cruel, a stoic one suddenly chatty. Writers tag OOC as a courtesy heads-up; readers use it as a filter. Whether OOC-ness is a flaw or the entire point (a "what if" premise) is one of fandom's eternal debates — see our AI fanfic guide for how AI handles staying in character.
OOC in AI chat: the control channel
On Character AI, Janitor AI, and similar apps, OOC has become something practical: a way to steer the AI without entering the story. Type (OOC: slow down the romance) or (OOC: describe the room again) and a well-behaved bot treats it as direction, not dialogue. We wrote a full guide with copy-paste examples: OOC commands in Character AI & Janitor AI.
OOC in texting
Outside fandom it just means "unlike them": "him apologizing first was so OOC." Same idea, applied to real people.
And then there's the app
OOC: The Playable Anime is an AI interactive anime app (iOS/Android/web) that borrowed the term as its name — you play inside AI-generated anime stories. It's the reason searches for "ooc" have exploded lately. Our complete guide to the app covers how it works and what it costs.
Try being gloriously in character instead
If you landed here from the roleplay side: the reason OOC markers exist is that good roleplay is about staying in character with someone who does the same. That's what ISEKAI ZERO is built for — AI story games where characters keep their personality and remember what happened chapters ago, with scene art and music. Free to play (free model, daily free Mana, watch ads for more), in your browser or on iOS and Google Play. The stories above are live now.
FAQ
What's the difference between OOC and IC? IC = your character speaking. OOC = you speaking. Mark the second one.
What does OOC mean on AO3? A tag warning that characters deviate from canon personalities.
What does OOC mean in GTA RP? Same as everywhere: out-of-character talk, usually restricted to specific channels — mixing IC and OOC ("breaking character") is a rule violation on most servers.
Is the OOC app related to the term? Only by name — it's an AI playable anime.
