RyzaChat:AI is the officially licensed "Atelier Ryza" AI chat RPG from SpiralAI, Koei Tecmo and Gust: talk to Ryza in your own words, and she gathers, synthesizes, fights and builds a boat with you on Kurken Island. It launched in Japan on 25 August 2026, reached the US, India, Indonesia and Taiwan in English on 9 September, and it is sitting at 2.1 stars on Google Play. The most common words in its reviews are "tokens", "subscription" and "15 messages". This review covers what RyzaChat actually is, what it costs to keep talking, what its own players say, and what to try if you love the idea but not the meter. Disclosure up front: we are the ISEKAI ZERO team, we make an anime AI roleplay game, and we will be fair anyway, because RyzaChat gets some important things right.

What RyzaChat is

You are the protagonist of "Ryza's dream world", a one-summer story on Kurken Island. There is no fixed scenario. Type "let's gather materials in the forest" and you go gathering; "a monster, hit it with a bomb" and combat resolves; "let's open a shop" and a shop plot starts. Behind the chat, an AI game master turns your words into quests, rolls, items and a persistent story. Ryza herself is a Live2D model with more than 2,000 facial expressions after the 1.1.1 update, and her voice is synthesized from new recordings by her original actress, Yuri Noguchi.

SpiralAI made three promises at the announcement, and so far it has kept them: no image-generating AI anywhere (every illustration is by human artists under series designer Toridamono), your conversations are not used to train the model, and royalties go back to the illustrators, voice actors and IP holders. In an industry that mostly does the opposite, that is worth saying.

What's genuinely good

• It is Ryza. Official art, official voice, the Secret trilogy cast, alchemy and gathering that behave like Atelier systems. Fans who tried it say the character work is real, not a skin on a generic chatbot.
• The game master improvises. Losing a battle becomes part of the story instead of a game over. Quests come from what you said you wanted to do.
• Memory is designed, not bolted on. Ryza is meant to remember up to a year of conversations and to "forget like a human", per the developers' 18 August livestream.
• The ethics are unusually clean. Human art, consent-based voice synthesis, no training on your chats, revenue sharing. This is the version of AI companion apps that the anime industry can live with.

The catch: a subscription that still needs tokens

Here is the pricing model in one sentence. You pay a subscription to unlock the game, the subscription gives you 15 text messages every 10 days, and every message beyond that costs tokens you buy separately.

That structure is why the Japanese launch hit X's trending list for the wrong reasons on 24 August, why one Japanese coverage video titled "the paywall pressure on the new Ryza AI chat is wild" passed 280,000 views in a fortnight, and why the English Google Play reviews from 12 and 13 September read like this:

"Even with the free trial you don't get daily tokens for chats; you still need to buy them. 15 chats every ten days is ridiculous." (3 stars)

"Ran out of chat tokens before I could even finish the tutorial, upon which you are only granted 15 per 10 days without subscribing? It's basically useless even as a toy." (1 star)

"I like the idea. Very much. But, the price is ridiculous. I would like to come back if the subscription is unlimited with their current price. If using tokens? No thanks." (2 stars)

"The app costs too much money long-term, considering Ryza is bound to forget stuff. Immediately forgot the very first quest we did. That being said, cute Live2D. I got $1 worth of enjoyment out of it, so try it if you'll remember to cancel your sub." (2 stars)

Japanese players said the same thing two weeks earlier. The most shared complaint on note.com: "after two conversations with Ryza I was prompted to subscribe." A Yahoo! Japan real-time sentiment roundup on launch day scored the reaction 24% positive, 76% negative, and the nickname that stuck was "hostess club pricing": you pay to get in, then you pay per conversation.

What it actually costs to talk every day

So a modest daily habit is roughly ¥4,000 ($27) a month, and a voice habit is over ¥11,000 ($70). The 3-day trial does not soften this: it converts automatically to the ¥6,000 annual plan, and trial users still have to buy tokens to keep chatting. One Japanese explainer's advice is to cancel within two days if you only wanted to look.

Other recurring complaints

• 200 characters per message. Reviewers call the input limit "stupid for a text-based adventure game". It is there to control token cost, and it shapes how you can play.
• Memory in practice. A year of memory is the design goal; "immediately forgot the very first quest we did" is a 12 September review. Early days, but the gap is real.
• Voice language is locked. There is no English text with Japanese voice option, and several reviewers dislike the English AI voice.
• The guardrails are tight, and the developers are watching. On 28 August SpiralAI warned players against prompt-injecting Ryza into explicit or out-of-character responses and against extracting assets, citing terms-of-service action. If you were hoping for an uncensored Ryza, this is not it.

To be fair to SpiralAI: version 1.1.1 shipped bug fixes and 2,000 expressions within three weeks of launch, and the team has said that if RyzaChat does well, other characters get their own apps. The technology is not the problem. The meter is.

RyzaChat vs ISEKAI ZERO, honestly

We are not the same product, so here is where we differ and where RyzaChat is better.

RyzaChat is one character, one island, one summer, done with an official license and official voice. If what you want is specifically Ryza, nothing else will do, and no alternative on this page will pretend otherwise.

ISEKAI ZERO is an anime roleplay game where you get isekai'd into a storyline written by a creator, with AI characters who remember you, dice when the story calls for them, and a visual novel mode that generates the scene as you play. There are thousands of storylines, from a summer slice-of-life sandbox at a Japanese high school to found-family adventuring parties and full isekai epics, and creators earn a 25% profit share when players pay to play their worlds. It runs in 17 languages, including Japanese, for both the interface and the AI's replies.

If you want Ryza, keep RyzaChat and budget for tokens. If what hooked you was the format, a summer story with an anime companion where your own words drive the plot, and you ran out of messages before you ran out of story, start with one of these:

• Life in Kashiwa High School: a detailed slice-of-life sandbox. Study, join a club, make friends, fall in love. The closest thing to "a summer with someone" on the platform.
• Welcome to Our Party: kicked out and broke, your own family recruits you back into the adventuring life. Found-family fluff with gathering, quests and fights.
• Crash Into Another World: a routine drive ends in a crash and you wake up among magic, monsters and adventurers who would rather you were dead.
• Another World Under Twin Moons: five princesses need to claim you to inherit the throne, one of the best-earning storylines on the platform.

Verdict

RyzaChat:AI is a well-made, well-intentioned adaptation attached to the most player-hostile meter in the genre. The character work, the voice, the ethics and the game-master design are all better than the app's 2.1-star rating suggests. The pricing is exactly as bad as the rating suggests: a subscription that buys you 45 messages a month, tokens for everything else, and a trial that auto-converts to a year. Try the trial to hear Ryza and see the island, set a reminder to cancel, and decide whether Ryza specifically is worth ¥4,000 a month to you. If she is not, the rest of this genre, including us, exists for exactly the player who wants to keep talking every day.
