Auburn Academy : The Monster WithinYour body is no longer your own. You'll learn to suppress it in due time. Welcome to Auburn Academy.Every anime fan hits these words sooner or later: tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dandere. They are the "dere types": shorthand for how a character shows (or hides) affection, and the reason a two-second blush can carry an entire romance arc. This guide covers the four core types, the twelve variants people argue about, famous examples for each, and ends where most guides can't: with a way to actually talk to each archetype.
Where "dere" comes from
"Deredere" (デレデレ) is Japanese onomatopoeia for being lovestruck, melted, gooey with affection. Each dere type bolts that soft core onto a trait that contradicts it (harshness, coldness, obsession, shyness), and the contradiction is the whole appeal. The fun of a tsundere isn't the anger. It's the moment the anger slips.
The four core dere types
| Type | Formula | Outside | Inside | Classic example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tsundere | tsuntsun (prickly) + dere | Snappy, dismissive, "it's not like I like you" | Deeply loyal, easily flustered | Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!), Rin Tohsaka (Fate) |
| Yandere | yanderu (sick) + dere | Sweet, devoted, attentive | Possessive, jealous, willing to hurt for love | Yuno Gasai (Future Diary) |
| Kuudere | cool + dere | Calm, blank, few words | Caring, shows it in tiny gestures | Rei Ayanami (Evangelion) |
| Dandere | danmari (silence) + dere | Quiet, avoids attention | Talkative and warm once trust exists | Hinata Hyuga (early Naruto) |
Tsundere: "I-it's not like I like you or anything!"
The most beloved romance archetype in anime. A tsundere treats the person they like worse than anyone else, precisely because the feelings are embarrassing. The arc runs on drip-feed: every stolen glance, every grudging thank-you counts for ten confessions because you know what it cost them. Modern writing splits them into classic tsundere (harsh by default, softens over the story) and modern tsundere (sweet by default, prickly only around their crush). Taiga Aisaka, Rin Tohsaka, Kurisu Makise (Steins;Gate) and Asuka Langley are the reference set.
Yandere: love that should worry you
The archetype that escaped anime and became a whole aesthetic. A yandere is gentle, doting and completely sincere; the sickness is that their love has no limits. Rivals disappear, phones get checked, doors get locked. The horror-romance contrast is the point: the sweeter the surface, the more unsettling what's underneath. Yuno Gasai (Future Diary), Satou Matsuzaka (Happy Sugar Life) and Yandere Simulator's Ayano made the type famous. In fiction it's fascinating; in real life it's a restraining order.
Kuudere: ice with a pulse
Cool, composed, expressionless, often mistaken for cold. A kuudere isn't hiding shyness; they simply don't perform emotion. The reward is proportional: one raised eyebrow, one "...stay" at the door, and the audience loses it. Rei Ayanami is the mold; Yuki Nagato (Haruhi) and Kanade Tachibana (Angel Beats!) refined it. If you like earning every millimeter of warmth, this is your type.
Dandere: the silent one who talks only to you
A dandere is quiet from shyness or anxiety, not composure. They shrink from groups, stammer under attention, and then, with exactly one person, become surprisingly expressive. The arc is about becoming that person. Hinata (Naruto), Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad) and Sawako Kuronuma (Kimi ni Todoke) are the textbook cases. The kuudere/dandere confusion is common: kuudere is quiet because they're fine; dandere is quiet because they're scared.
The 12 dere variants worth knowing
| Type | Meaning | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| Deredere | pure dere | Openly affectionate with everyone, no games, no drama |
| Himedere | hime (princess) + dere | Demands to be treated like royalty by the one they love |
| Oujidere | ouji (prince) + dere | The male equivalent of himedere |
| Kamidere | kami (god) + dere | Arrogant, god-complex, secretly wants your approval most |
| Sadodere | sadist + dere | Shows love by teasing, taunting and toying with you |
| Bakadere | baka (fool) + dere | Clumsy, ditzy, adorable, occasionally destroys a kitchen |
| Undere | un (yes) + dere | Agrees with everything you say, can't refuse you |
| Hinedere | hineru (twisted) + dere | Cynical and jaded; the softness is buried under sarcasm |
| Bodere | boke (bashful) + dere | Gets so flustered by affection they lash out physically |
| Mayadere | mayakashi (deceptive) + dere | Starts as an antagonist, switches sides for love |
| Kekkondere | kekkon (marriage) + dere | Wants to marry you roughly five minutes after meeting |
| Darudere | darui (lazy) + dere | Unmotivated and sleepy, except where you're concerned |
The formula never changes: dominant trait + dere. Fans coin new ones constantly ("shundere" for the melancholic, "nyandere" for cat-like), so treat anything beyond the table as community slang rather than canon.
How to tell them apart in 10 seconds
- Snaps at you, blushes, denies everything → tsundere
- Sweet to you, terrifying to your friends → yandere
- Says nothing, feels nothing, then quietly fixes your problem → kuudere
- Says nothing, hides, then writes you a three-page letter → dandere
- Loves everyone loudly → deredere
- Loves you but insists you kneel → himedere / oujidere
- Loves you and enjoys watching you squirm → sadodere
Dere types as a writing tool
If you write characters (fanfic, OCs, roleplay), dere types are a cheat code for contrast. Pick the dere, then decide what cracks it: a tsundere's crack is being caught caring; a kuudere's is a situation logic can't solve; a yandere's is the moment the beloved chooses someone else. The crack is your scene. Our headcanon generator and OC template both work well with a dere type as the starting seed.
From reading about them to talking to them
Definitions are fine. The reason people love a tsundere isn't the definition; it's living the drip: the insults, the blush, the gesture that slips out. That only exists in a story, and until recently only in someone else's.
On ISEKAI ZERO, an AI roleplay and story game, you can step into stories with characters written as each archetype and chat freely:
- The character holds the personality: a tsundere doesn't melt in two messages, a kuudere doesn't deliver speeches, a yandere stays sweet right up until it isn't
- They remember what happened between you, so the thaw (or the spiral) is real, scene by scene
- Every scene generates illustrations and music, and the story moves based on what you do
- Free to start: a free model, free Mana every day, and optional ads to earn more
The trending stories above feature tsundere and yandere leads. Pick one and test whether the archetype survives contact with you. You can also browse characters by personality tag.
