The AI Roleplay Glossary: Every Term, Explained in Plain Language
The AI roleplay world speaks a dialect assembled from fanfic culture, tabletop gaming, and machine learning papers. This is the decoder ring — plain-language definitions, alphabetical-ish, opinionated where it helps.
Character terms
- OC (Original Character): a character you invented, as opposed to one from an existing fandom. OCs are the safest and most rewarding thing to publish — on platforms with creator earnings (like ours), they're the only monetizable kind.
- Character card / sheet: the structured definition of a character — personality, voice, backstory, example dialogue — that the AI performs from. Card quality determines roleplay quality more than model choice does.
- Persona: the character you play as; your side of the sheet.
- Headcanon: a personal belief about a character not stated in canon. We built a generator for these.
Play terms
- RP / roleplay: collaboratively acting out characters in a scenario, in turns.
- OOC (out of character): speaking as yourself, usually in brackets — "(ooc: let's skip to the festival)". The universal control channel.
- Slow-burn: romance paced across many chapters instead of message twelve. Requires memory and structure; the whole argument of our romantic AI guide.
- Ships / shipping: rooting for (or engineering) a relationship between characters.
- Lorebook / world info: a reference the AI consults so facts stay consistent — kingdom names, magic rules, who's secretly a vampire.
Machine terms
- Token: the unit AI models read and generate text in — roughly ¾ of a word. Pricing and memory limits are measured in tokens. Full explainer →
- Context window: how much recent conversation the model can "see." When a scene exceeds it, older details fall out — the technical root of AI amnesia. Platforms fight this with summaries and structured memory.
- Model: the underlying AI (different vendors, different writing personalities). Most chat apps lock you to one; some (ours included) let you switch mid-story.
- Temperature: a randomness dial — low is focused and repetitive, high is creative and chaotic.
- Filter: platform-level content restrictions. The single most argued-about word in the hobby; approaches range from strict global filters to rated, age-gated tiers to bring-your-own-model freedom. The landscape →
- Jailbreak: prompt tricks to evade a filter. Against most platforms' terms; mostly a symptom of filter-model mismatch.
Format terms
- Visual novel (VN): story presentation with character art, backgrounds, and music over the text — the format our storylines borrow.
