The State of AI Roleplay 2026: What 28,000 Search Terms Reveal
We pulled the complete organic search footprints of 12 AI roleplay and interactive-story platforms — 28,253 unique US search terms — to map what people actually want from this category in 2026. The dataset covers Character.AI, Janitor AI, Talkie, PolyBuzz, SpicyChat, CrushOn, AI Dungeon, NovelAI, SillyTavern, Chai, Dopple, and Moescape. Findings below; cite freely with a link.
Finding 1: Character names are the real demand engine
The single largest source of non-brand search traffic to AI roleplay platforms isn't "ai chat" keywords — it's named characters. Individual fandom and creator names ("toji," "pomni," "leon kennedy") each drive 20,000–120,000 US searches per month to platforms hosting a character page for them, at near-zero ranking competition. Users don't search for an app; they search for someone to talk to.
Finding 2: The category's head terms are winner-take-most
"AI chat" (841,000 monthly US searches) and "ai girlfriend" (123,000) are dominated by two or three platforms each, with ranking difficulty among the highest in consumer software. Meanwhile hundreds of specific-intent terms — "best ai chatbot for roleplay," "ai fanfic," "romantic ai" — sit nearly uncontested. The category's SEO is a barbell: brutal head, empty middle.
Finding 3: Platform search trajectories tell a churn story
Search interest data (24-month window) shows Character.AI's organic footprint peaking in early 2025 and declining ~40% since; Talkie following a similar arc; PolyBuzz spiking mid-2025 on social-driven brand search (1.6M monthly brand searches at peak) before cooling. No platform holds category leadership in search for longer than ~18 months — users are actively shopping, constantly.
Finding 4: The filter wars are visible in the data
"Character ai alternative(s)" draws over 12,000 monthly searches with content-filter frustration as the dominant documented motive, and the permissive-platform cluster ("nsfw ai," "spicy ai chat," adjacent terms) collectively exceeds 200,000 monthly searches. The market is loudly split between polish-with-filters and freedom-with-friction — and the data suggests neither pole fully satisfies: both directions' users keep searching for alternatives.
Finding 5: Japan is a parallel market, not a translated one
Japanese demand is native-language and structurally different: "AIチャット" alone draws 74,000 monthly searches in Japan, while English category terms barely register there. European markets show the inverse — German, Italian, and Spanish users overwhelmingly search this category in English (native-language equivalents run ~50 searches/month against thousands for English terms from the same countries).
