12 October 2026: Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The platform is still running and subscriptions still bill, but the company's own court filing says it "will be wound down" if nobody buys it in the sale process that ends in late November. Disney is paying $20 million for a licence to the code and hiring most of the staff; it is not buying the app, the accounts or your chats. Searches for a Character AI alternative had already jumped roughly twentyfold in the last week of August 2026, and the reason was not mysterious: a date-of-birth prompt on 12 August locked verified adults out with a "no longer eligible" message, free chats are metered and interrupted by ads every few messages, and the chat styles long-time users loved were retired for a single cheaper model. The Google Play rating sits at 2.2 stars from 2.4 million reviews. This page is the honest map of where people are going, grouped by why they are leaving. The catch is that the good models are bring-your-own: you connect an API key or proxy and pay a model provider per token, which adds setup and a separate bill.
