Apps Like Zeta AI (2026): 7 Alternatives With Better Memory and No Ad Timer

Stories you can play right now

You searched "apps like Zeta" for one of two reasons: you love free AI character chat and want more of it, or you just watched the ad timer count down for the third time this hour and want the same thing somewhere else. This list covers both. Every entry is an AI chat or roleplay app you can use today, with what it costs, what it does to your time, and who it is actually for, as of 13 October 2026. Disclosure: we make ISEKAI ZERO, which is on the list. We put it where we think it belongs and say plainly where the others are better.

Why people leave Zeta

Quick recap so the recommendations make sense (full detail in our Zeta AI review). Zeta's text chat is genuinely free and uncapped. It is also ad-supported in a way that gets louder the longer you use it: ads between chats, a monthly allowance of ad-free hours, and a wait timer when no ad is served. The zeta pass is $14.99 a month and removes the ads, but premium models and images still cost Pieces. Long stories drift because memory is inconsistent, your own chat profile is capped at 2,000 characters, and in September 2026 the app moved to a 13+ rating and tightened its content rules.

So the things people are shopping for are: no ad timer, memory that holds across a long story, a way to write your own character down properly, a model that does not cost extra, and, for some, a place where the rules did not just change under them.

The list

1. ISEKAI ZERO (ours)

Best for: people who wanted the story, not just the chat, and who are tired of characters forgetting the plot.

ISEKAI ZERO is an anime roleplay game. You get pulled into a storyline written by a creator, play it out with a cast of AI characters who share one memory of what happened, roll dice when the story calls for it, and watch a visual novel mode draw the scene as you go. The catalogue overlaps heavily with Zeta's most-played shelf, fantasy, academy and romance, but authored: an arranged marriage that ended a war, a magic academy where you are the commoner on a scholarship, a city where the hero society is corrupt.

  • Cost: free option with daily Mana, plus optional ad top-ups. Ads are something you choose to watch for Mana, never a timer between messages. Paid play is pay as you go, 100 Arcane = $1, roughly 1,000+ messages per dollar on the default model, and the full cost breakdown is public.
  • Memory: story-level, shared by every character in the scene, with a codex of facts the AI must keep. This is the one Zeta complaint we built the product around.
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, web. 17 languages.
  • Where Zeta is better: a far bigger library of single characters, longer free-form replies, and a one-minute character builder. ISEKAI ZERO storylines have structure; if you want a blank chat with one bot, keep reading.

Try it with The Fox and the March (enemies to lovers, the marriage that ended a war) or Eldenwynn Academy, or start free and browse.

2. Emochi

Best for: the closest like-for-like swap. Free anime character chat, huge library, different ad schedule.

Emochi (by the FlowGPT team) is the app Zeta is most often compared to: anime characters, user-made bots, TikTok-driven growth, more than ten million Android installs. The free tier gives you two basic chat models and an ad every several messages; Plus is listed at $9.99 a month and Ultra at $16.99 with a monthly allowance of Mochi, its currency. The consistent criticism is short memory, with testers finding characters keep details for roughly twenty messages, and a free tier that has lost models during 2026. If Zeta's ads were your only problem, Emochi feels familiar. If memory was the problem, it will not fix it.

3. Character.AI

Best for: the biggest character library and the smoothest apps, if you can live with the filter.

Character.AI is where many Zeta users came from, and the reason they left is still there: a strict content filter and, since August 2026, age verification for a large share of accounts. In exchange you get the largest bot library in the genre, group chats, calls, and polished apps. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month for faster replies and priority access. We compare it in detail in Character AI alternatives and Is c.ai+ worth it?.

4. PolyBuzz

Best for: casual character chat with a very large, very young community.

PolyBuzz (formerly Poly.AI) is the other app Zeta's new users mention by name, usually as "Poly's message limit was too short for me." It is a free character chat app with a daily message allowance on the free tier and a subscription to lift it. The library is enormous and the community skews teenage. If you want Zeta's volume of characters with a counter instead of an ad timer, this is the trade. Our apps like PolyBuzz page covers it properly.

5. Talkie

Best for: companion-style chat with voices and collectible character cards.

Talkie leans into the companion side: voice, cards, a gacha-flavoured economy. The free tier is a message allowance (roughly 50 messages before the wall, then a refill), and chats older than 60 days can disappear, which is its version of Zeta's memory problem. Subscriptions and gem packs on top. Details in Is Talkie AI free? and apps like Talkie.

6. Chai

Best for: people who want a lot of user-made bots and do not mind a message allowance that refills every few hours.

Chai is the veteran: a huge bot library, a free allowance that resets on a timer, and Premium and Ultra tiers that remove it. It is chat-shaped like Zeta, with shorter replies and less polish, and it is one of the few apps in this list that has been around long enough to have stable pricing. See Chai Premium vs Ultra.

7. SillyTavern (run it yourself)

Best for: tinkerers who never want to see an ad or a Piece again.

SillyTavern is free, open-source, and runs on your own PC or through free API tiers. You bring the model, it brings the roleplay interface, lorebooks and character cards, with no 2,000-character profile cap and no ads. The setup is an afternoon and you are your own support team. We wrote the whole thing up, hardware and all, in our SillyTavern setup guide.

How to choose

  • "I want Zeta, but the story has to survive a month." ISEKAI ZERO. Shared memory and a codex are the point.
  • "I want Zeta with different ads." Emochi.
  • "I want the biggest library and I am over 18 with ID handy." Character.AI.
  • "I want a counter instead of a timer." PolyBuzz or Chai.
  • "I want voices and cards." Talkie.
  • "I want to own the whole stack." SillyTavern, with our guide open in the next tab.

Is there a Zeta mod apk or free zeta pass?

People search for this every day, so the honest answer: Zeta's ads, Pieces and models are controlled on Scatter Lab's servers, not in the app, so a modified apk cannot remove the ad timer or add Pieces. Anything promising a free zeta pass is a fake and usually bundles malware. The way to chat without an ad timer is to pick an app that does not have one, which is what this page is for.
