Explore the Multiverse!A tear in reality appears in front of you that allows you to go anywhere you so choose. They Took Your SeatYou took the hit. You nearly died. Now you're back but you've been replaced. Forgiveness was never guaranteed.Short answer, as of 14 October 2026: not yet, but it might. Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 12 October 2026. The site and apps are still running, subscriptions are still billing, and your chats are still there. What happens next is decided by a court-supervised sale that runs through late November. If nobody buys the platform, the company's own filing says it "will be wound down". This page keeps the dates straight, explains what Disney is and is not buying, tells you how to back up your chats, and lists where people are moving. Disclosure: we are the ISEKAI ZERO team, one of the alternatives, and we will say so again when it is relevant.
What actually happened
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Aug 2024 | Google pays about $2.7 billion to license Character.AI's technology and rehires the founders. The consumer app continues with a smaller team. |
| Aug 2025 | Character.AI hires an investment bank to find a buyer. About 28 parties are approached. |
| Sep 2025 | Disney sends a cease-and-desist over fan-made Disney characters on the platform. Character.AI removes them. |
| Jan 2026 | Character.AI and Google settle the Florida lawsuit brought by the mother of a 14-year-old who died by suicide. Kentucky and Pennsylvania file their own suits later in the year. |
| Apr–Sep 2026 | Age verification, metered free chats, ads, and the retirement of the old chat styles. Google Play rating falls to 2.2 stars. Our timeline of those changes is on the alternatives page. |
| 18 Sep 2026 | Character.AI signs agreements with Disney: a $20 million licence deal, and job offers for most of its remaining staff. |
| 12 Oct 2026 | Chapter 11 petition filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (case 26-11603). Company blog: "the platform remains up and running". |
| 13 Nov 2026 | Proposed deadline for objections to the sale. |
| 20 Nov 2026 | Proposed deadline for competing bids. |
| 23–24 Nov 2026 | Proposed auction, then the sale hearing where the judge approves a buyer. |
| 17 Dec 2026 | Outside closing date on the Disney deal. If nothing has closed by then, Disney can walk. |
The November dates come from the company's bidding-procedures motion and still need the judge's approval, so treat them as the plan rather than the law. We will update this table when the court rules.
Why it went bankrupt
The court declaration is unusually blunt. The bank approached around 28 potential buyers over a year. It got one offer, which was "ultimately not deemed to be actionable", because buyers felt "the litigation and regulatory overhang on Character was too great". The company told the court it has had about 163 million current and past accounts, held about $59 million in cash at filing, and listed assets and liabilities each in the $50 to $100 million range. The product was not short of users. It was short of anyone willing to own the lawsuits that came with them.
What Disney is buying, and what it is not
This is the part most headlines get wrong. Disney is not buying Character.AI.
- Disney gets: a non-exclusive, perpetual licence to the code behind the chatbot's training, safety and serving systems, plus nine patents, for $20 million. It is also hiring about 65 of the roughly 86 remaining employees, including the former CEO, who becomes Disney's chief technology officer. Disney has budgeted around $180 million over three years for those salaries and retention bonuses, paid to the staff, not to the company.
- Disney does not get: the app, the brand, the domains, the user accounts, your chats, the training data, the finished models, or the chat styles. The term sheet says plainly that this is not a sale of the company as a going concern.
- What that means for the app: under the deal as filed, nobody is buying the thing you use. Disney's staff keep the platform running during a transition period ending no later than 18 February 2027, at no charge. After that, the motion says: "If such offers are unavailable, or if the transaction with Disney is not approved, Character's platform will be wound down."
So the question is whether a second bidder shows up by 20 November wanting the consumer platform itself. Disney is the "stalking horse", the floor bid that others have to beat. The company has said that if no qualifying rival bid arrives it will ask the court to approve the Disney deal without an auction.
Three ways this ends
- A buyer takes the platform. Someone bids for the app, accounts and brand by 20 November, wins the auction, and keeps it running under new ownership. This is the only scenario where Character.AI continues as you know it. Nobody has publicly stepped forward as of 14 October.
- Disney's deal closes, nobody buys the app. Disney gets its licence and its engineers, and the platform is wound down after the transition period. The company has said it will notify subscribers in advance of changes to paid features.
- The Disney deal fails. The filing says the platform is wound down in that case too, and with less runway.
Two of the three end with the platform closing. That is why the honest answer to "is Character.AI shutting down?" is "not today, and possibly not for months, but you should back up anything you care about now".
What happens to your chats, bots and subscription
From the company's 12 October blog post, as things stand:
- Chats and bots: still there, still covered by the existing privacy policy. Nothing has been deleted because of the filing.
- Subscriptions: c.ai+ remains active and billing is unchanged. The company says it will notify subscribers before any change to paid features. It has not said anything about refunds, so if you are on an annual plan, think about whether you want it renewing.
- Your data in a sale: the Disney deal explicitly excludes user data and chats. If a different buyer takes the platform, your data presumably goes with it under the same privacy policy. If the platform is wound down, the company has not yet said what happens to stored chats. Do not count on them being available after the wind-down.
How to export your Character.AI data
Character.AI has no per-chat export button. There is an account-wide export that arrives by email.
- Open Settings. On the web it is under your profile; in the app it is the gear icon.
- Find Account, then Manage Account & Data (the mobile app labels this Privacy in some versions).
- Tap Export data or Export my data.
- Wait for an email with a download link. Users report anything from a few hours to a day, so request it once and check spam before requesting again.
If you only want one roleplay, copying the text into a document or printing the page to PDF is faster than waiting for the full export. The export is a text dump, not something you can upload into another app, but it is enough to rebuild a character or carry a story over by hand.
Menu names have moved around across app versions. If a step does not match what you see, the setting is wherever account deletion lives, since both are in the same "manage your data" area.
Where people are going
We keep a separate, longer page on this: the best Character.AI alternatives, with a comparison table and a pick-by-reason section. The short version, with our own entry declared:
- Free, unfiltered, bring your own model: Janitor AI. Large community library, no subscription, but the good models are pay-per-token through an API key.
- Total control, no company that can shut it down: SillyTavern, which you run yourself. We wrote a full setup guide because it is the one option on this list that cannot go bankrupt.
- Chat that turns into a story: ISEKAI ZERO, which is us. You play inside storylines written by creators, characters remember what happened, and there is a free option with daily Mana and ad top-ups rather than a monthly cap. If you liked Character.AI for roleplay rather than one-off chats, start with Another World Under Twin Moons or browse free. The honest catch: our character library is smaller than Character.AI's, because we are story-first.
- Casual anime chat: CrushOn, SpicyChat, Chai, PolyBuzz, Talkie. All do quick in-character chat. All have ads or energy meters. None of them fix the memory problem.
One practical note. Whichever app you move to, the thing you are really carrying over is the character definition and the story so far, not the chat log. Export the data, keep the character descriptions, and rebuild the ones that matter. That takes an hour, and it is an hour you cannot get back once a platform is gone.
Is Character.AI safe to keep using right now?
Yes, in the sense that the servers are up, the staff are still there, and the court process gives it at least until late November and realistically into early 2027. The company has said it will give notice before changes. The risk is not that it vanishes tomorrow. The risk is that you wake up in December to a wind-down notice with a short window, so the sensible move is to export now and carry on using it as long as it lasts.
What we will update
- Whether the judge approves the November schedule.
- Whether any bidder for the platform itself appears before 20 November.
- The auction and sale hearing outcome on 23–24 November.
- Any company notice about subscriptions, data retention or a shutdown date.
